FIFTY-FOUR

We do not remember days, we remember moments. Cesare Pavese

I do not know what day it was that my cousin taught me how to “hotwire” the tractor with a nickel. I don’t remember which weekend it was that my friend Edie and I were treated so welcomingly by a lady in Bray, Ireland. I have no clue what day it was that my friend Em helped me dye the ends of my hair bright blue. All these moments, and many more, stand out in my memories as noteworthy. The one thing all of them share, they are moments that involve others. My most memorable moments are not alone. Many of them are with family or close friends. Some are with strangers, or strangers at the beginning. In fact, I am hard pressed to think of any significant memory that was just me, by myself. I would say, “we remember moments and the people in them with us.”
