As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the
highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy
Just
as “I’m sorry” becomes empty when there are no actions to back up the words, so
does “Thank you.” I’ve been taught that gratitude is an action. If I am
thankful or grateful for anything in my life, then I need to show that by my
actions. When I misuse or ignore a gift, I am saying with my actions that it is
unimportant to me. When I am thankful for the help and care that’s been given
to me, I give of myself. I was sitting the other day in a clubhouse where I
often go to write. A woman showed up needing to talk. Because others have been
there for me, I chose to be there for her. I don’t know if it helped her. It
helped me say thank you. It helped me demonstrate my thanks to all the women
who did the same thing before me.
