Hopelessness
cannot be measured, and ranking misery is a foolhardy exercise. Judith Morrison
I
have a friend who likes to comment that her troubles seem petty when compared
to what some others are going through. I understand that sometimes we need
perspective. Sometimes the fact that I have more bills than money seems
daunting but it doesn’t equate to a child in the hospital.
I
also need to recognize that pain, hunger, and despair all feel the same, no
matter what the cause. And when any of them last for a long time, they can
begin to seem insurmountable. It is in moments of hopelessness and misery that
any gesture of support can change a life. A smile from a stranger or a prayer
offered by a chaplain is beautiful thing. Sometimes though, concrete evidence
of is needed. A meal. A bed. A ride.
